what to look for in a coffee mug
insulation
Arguably the most important job of any mug is to keep your coffee hot, or at least warm. Unless you opt for an electrically heated smart mug or a vacuum insulated travel mug, you shouldn't expect your coffee to stay hot for hours. So look for a more conical shape, which reduces steam escape, such as a tulip cup, or a heavier build, which provides more insulation.
Material
Most standard coffee mugs are made from some kind of ceramic, which is clay that's been heated and treated to harden and strengthen. While standard ceramic can be glazed or left as is, porcelain is a type of ceramic that is fired at a higher temperature for a longer period of time, making it more durable. While porcelain mugs are less likely to chip and break than regular ceramic mugs, you never want to knock any mug too hard or you risk breaking it. If you go the less traditional route and opt for something like stainless steel, you're definitely looking for something more durable but perhaps less comfortable.
size
Coffee mugs come in a variety of sizes, from small espresso mugs for double servings to travel mugs that hold 16 ounces or more. Your standard coffee mug will usually hold 8-10 ounces, but you can also find 12 and even 15 ounce cups. Choose a large coffee if you like your morning cup of coffee and can finish it before it gets cold.
ergonomics
The mug is a bit odd in design. They drank from cups with handles, which they had to hold because the filled cups themselves were too hot. But those handles are often not well thought out, forcing you to try and squeeze your fingers into an uncomfortable space. We recommend looking for more ergonomically designed mugs that actually fit comfortably in the human hand.
Dishwasher and microwave safe
In addition to drinking from your cups, you'll need them for a few other things: cleaning them and warming them up while your coffee gets stale. Dishwasher-safe mugs make cleanup time easier, and microwave-safe mugs are easier than pouring coffee into a separate microwave-safe container, warming up, then pouring into a reheated mug Back into your cold cup.
