What kind of setting do you want to create?
How to set the table
Setting a table is not as difficult as it seems. The basic rule is: Utensils are placed in the order of
use; that is, from the outside in. A second rule, with only a few exceptions, is: Forks go to the left
of the plate, and knives and spoons go to the right. And finally, only set the table with utensils
you will use. No soup; no soup spoon.
Basic Table Setting:
Here are two great tips to help you remember the order of plates and utensils:
1. IMAGINE THE WORD "FORKS." The order from left to right is: F for fork and O for plate (
Shape! ), K for knive, S for spoon. (Well, you have to forget about R, but you get it.)
Idea! )
2. Place your hands in front of you and touch your thumbtips against yours
Make a lowercase "B" with your index finger and a lowercase "D" with your hand
Right hand. This reminds you that "Bread and Butter" is located on the left side of the table settings,
"Drink" is on the right. Some other things to know:
• The blade is always facing the plate
• Place the napkin to the left of the fork or on a plate
• Bread knives and butter knives are optional
Informal table setting:
When serving an informal three-course dinner, a typical venue setting includes these tableware
and dishes:
